First Lego League
(FLL) - Challenge Team

Students design, build, and program a LEGO robot while working together to solve missions, research a real-world problem, and present their ideas. FLL is a great first competition team experience for students who are ready to move beyond regular robotics classes.

Build, Program, and Compete

FIRST LEGO League Challenge gives students hands-on experience with robotics, programming, teamwork, research, and presentation skills.

Why Small Teams?

The Power of Four

FLL teams at Bytes and Bots are kept small so each student has more opportunities to build, program, test, present, and contribute ideas. Smaller teams help students stay involved throughout the season and give mentors more time to support each student.

Robot Design

Students build and improve a LEGO robot that can complete missions on the official FLL game table. They learn how to design attachments, test ideas, and make the robot more reliable over time.

Innovation Project

Each team researches a real-world problem connected to the season theme. Students develop a solution, prepare a presentation, and practice explaining their ideas clearly to judges.

Programming and Missions

Students program the robot to move, turn, use sensors, and complete mission runs. They learn how to break big challenges into smaller steps and improve their code through testing.

Core Values and Teamwork

Students learn how to work as a team, share ideas, solve disagreements, and support each other. FLL rewards not only the robot, but also teamwork, creativity, and gracious professionalism.

Season Commitment

August–December

The FLL season runs from August through December. Students work on the official robot game, build and program their robot, prepare their Innovation Project, practice judging, and attend competition events.

Team Practice

FLL team practice is planned for Sundays from 12:00 PM–3:00 PM. As competition gets closer, additional practice may be recommended depending on team progress and schedule.

Qualifier and Advancement

Teams typically attend a qualifier event during the season. If a team advances, additional practices or advancement events may continue beyond the regular season.

Built by students. Guided by mentors. Proven in competition.
